The dark streaking on Gulf Coast roofs is gloeocapsa magma, an algae that feeds on the limestone filler in asphalt shingles. It is not a stain and it does not wash off with rain. Left alone it spreads across the slope, holds moisture against the shingle, and shortens the life of a roof that would otherwise have had years left.

Roof cleaning here means soft washing, never pressure. I inspect the shingle condition, flashing, and any fragile areas first, then apply the industry-standard algaecide solution at low pressure from a position that does not require walking the slope where it can be avoided. The solution kills the organism at the root. A gentle rinse moves the dead matter into the gutter line, and gutters and downspouts get flushed as part of the job rather than left packed with debris.
